About this track

Starting at Tomahawk lagoon carpark and picnic area. The track begins at the far end of the carpark and follows the lagoon through mixed native and non-native bush. Keep an eye out for water fowl resting on the banks of Tomahawk lagoon as you walk. Once you reach the first stile, the gradient increases as you gently climb through the bush for 5mins. After reaching the second stile, the track opens up into open farmland with fencing on both sides of the track. While walking up the track, views of South Dunedin and the Peninsula become more prominent as you trace your way along historic stone walls. Keep your eyes peeled for Little Owls and other birds as you continue the climb. Upon reaching the top of the track, Soldiers’ Monument dedicated to WW1 soldiers comes into view and the track connects onto the Soldiers monument track. The view from the top of monument is spectacular showing panoramic views of the Otago Peninsula, Dunedin and the harbour and is well worth the climb.

Getting there

41 Peg Track provides a link between Ocean Grove and Highcliff Road. Access to the track is off Oregon Street with parking in the Tomahawk Carpark. The start of the trail is a gap in the fence at the end of the carpark.
