3 Waters pipe renewals

Over the next year, the Dunedin City Council will be renewing water, stormwater and wastewater pipes in several parts of Dunedin to improve the quality of the city’s infrastructure, reduce overflows and improve water supply fire flows.

This project includes work in Mornington, Maori Hill, North Dunedin and Dunedin Central.

Overall, work will start in December 2018 and run until around September 2019. Residents will be advised of the specific dates for each area. The project will include some work in private properties.

  • Cochrane / Haywood Street area, Mornington

We are replacing almost 1.5km of pipes in the Cochrane/Haywood Street area. We will be replacing water and wastewater pipes on the road on Cochrane Street and will replace wastewater and stormwater pipes on some private properties. We are aiming to start work in this area in January 2019 and to complete it in the second half of the year.

The pipes in the Cochrane/Haywood Street area, like those in many parts of the city, are old and do not perform well. The pipes are up to 100 years old and have begun to deteriorate.

    The project will:

    • renew infrastructure that has reached the end of its life
    • reduce the risk of wastewater overflows caused by stormwater and groundwater getting into our wastewater network and by wastewater getting into our stormwater network
    • reduce the risk of wastewater contaminating watercourses and private property
    • improve water supply fire flows to current standards.
