From first-time riders to experienced cross-country racers, Bethunes Gully and Forrester Park offer one of Dunedin's premier mountain biking destinations, with flowing beginner trails, technical singletrack and a dedicated BMX facility.

About these tracks

Bethunes Gully and Forrester Park feature an extensive network of cross-country mountain bike trails catering to riders of all abilities.

Forrester Park is ideal for beginners and families, with flowing loop tracks that provide an enjoyable introduction to mountain biking. The popular Spooky Forest trail includes bermed corners, small jumps and rollable features, allowing riders to build confidence and develop their skills at their own pace. Riders can also enjoy the adjacent BMX track to further develop their riding techniques.

For more experienced riders, Bethunes Gully offers a challenging network of technical cross-country trails. Designed to National Expert Cross-Country standards, these tracks feature steep climbs, technical descents, roots, rocks and challenging obstacles that reward confident riders with exciting and varied terrain.

The trail network includes the original Haggis Hunter trail on the true right of Lindsay Creek, together with the newer Nationals XC, In and Out, and GLC trails on the true left. Riders can link trails together to create loops of varying length and difficulty.

Directions

The main access point is via the Bethunes Gully Car Park on Cluny Road, approximately 10 minutes north of central Dunedin.

Alternatively, continue past the BMX track to access Forrester Park.

Public Transport: Bus Access will get you most of the way! The Number 8 bus route will take walkers to the beginning of Norwood Street and then from there you have an additional 25mins along the road to get to the beginning of the tracks.

Know before you go

Trail difficulty varies significantly across the network. Forrester Park is suitable for beginner and intermediate riders, while many of the Bethunes Gully trails are intended for experienced mountain bikers.

When climbing via the Mt Cargill Walking Track, cyclists must not continue beyond the skid track, as the upper section is a walking-only track.

Track conditions can change following wet weather. Ride within your ability, wear appropriate safety gear and be considerate of other trail users.
