Heritage Buildings Maintenance Checklist

The DCC and its heritage partners have created a building maintenance checklist to guide heritage building owners in developing good practices for the regular maintenance of their buildings, and to help them prepare their own maintenance programmes.

Heritage building owners understand the need to keep a close eye on the condition of their buildings. Often, timely maintenance and simple repairs can prevent future issues resulting in thousands of dollars of damage. A blocked gutter or drain, a leaking window or roof, poor ventilation, or even a leaky, overflowing tap, are all generally small maintenance items, but left unchecked can cause costly repairs. Recognising and acting on problems before they become critical helps owners to plan and budget for work on the building ahead of when it is needed.

This checklist is intended as a guide to help historic building owners plan an ongoing maintenance programme. Since all buildings are different, the checklist is general in nature and can be adapted to fit specific buildings.

The checklist is not intended to take the place of a building condition survey by a professional building surveyor, architect, engineer or contractor. If faults are identified using this checklist, we strongly recommend you consult a relevant professional for advice to address the issue. The DCC’s Heritage Advisor is able to provide some initial guidance regarding this. Contact heritage@dcc.govt.nz for further information.
