Moana Pool redevelopment

Moana Pool opened in 1964 and due to its age, parts of the buildings, facilities and equipment are deteriorating and due for replacement.

The family changing rooms have been upgraded with new accessible and dry changing rooms added. The Stuart Street (west end) wall has been seismically strengthened with new external insulated cladding installed. The internal west wall has been refurbished with new panelling and a new tiled design by our mana whenua partners Aukaha. New fabric ductwork and painting has been added to the learner’s pool.

There will be further works moving forward as we continue to refurbish other areas of the facility. These will include fire safety improvements, asbestos removal (facility plant area), roofing and ceiling refurbishment between the main pool and leisure pool, ventilation & heat recovery updates and essential maintenance on the hydro-slides. This work is expected to take place over the next 2-3 years.

We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption for pool users and will keep them well informed throughout the project.

Progress updates

  • September 2025

We are set to enter the next phase of work refurbishing the water slides at Moana Pool.

On Monday 22 September, we will begin work on the exterior of the slides. This requires scaffolding, which will affect parking at the rear of Moana Pool.

Car parking in this area will be reduced and navigation within the parking area will be affected.

We hope to complete the work by mid-December.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this disruption.

The latest phase of work at Moana Pool involves refurbishing the hydroslides, cleaning the exterior of the slides, refurbishing sections of the slides and the support structure, re-grouting tiles in the exit pool, as well as repairing the access ramp and top enclosure area.

The project is among a range of significant recent improvements, including ceiling work, new wall tiles, upgraded family change facilities, as well changes to plant/equipment areas.

In addition, contractors are installing new fire alarm and emergency lighting systems, and will begin installing a new ceiling in the area between the main pool and the leisure pool in approximately six weeks.

The water slides have been closed from 23 June and work is expected to take up to five months.

Work on a new ceiling, in the area between the main pool and the leisure pool, is expected to be completed in October.

The spa pool will remain operational, but access to the spa will be limited to stair use only. The leisure pool’s lazy river, curtains and waterfalls will be inaccessible while work is underway.

Work on a new ceiling, in the area between the main pool and the leisure pool, begins the week starting Monday 14 July and is expected to be completed in October.

The work will be completed in sections. The first section extends from the staff entrance door to the elevator. During this time, there will be changes to access leading to the leisure and spa pools (from the main pool area).

The spa pool will remain operational, but access to the spa will be limited to stair use only. The leisure pool’s lazy river, curtains and waterfalls will be inaccessible while work is underway.

  • March 2025

The rapid river in the leisure pool is closed due to hoardings in place (related to the roof and ceiling refurbishment) until further notice.

  • September 2023

Access to the lift and the corridor leading to the learner’s pool is now available for public use. The old dive pool is still closed until further notice.

  • May 2023

Access to the lift and the corridor leading to the learner’s pool will be unavailable from May to July 2023. Alternative access will be available at the rear of the building for people who need to use a lift. Please check in with reception and they will direct you to the rear entrance.

  • September 2022

Work begins to improve changing facilities. The number of first floor changing rooms will increase from nine to 16, including three accessible changing rooms (two with beds and hoists) and eleven family changing rooms – five with showers and six without showers. Four poolside showers will also be added beside the learners’ pool.

The old dive pool will be temporarily closed due to seismic strengthening and recladding of the building’s west wall.
