Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Dunedin's Zero Carbon vision

What might a Zero Carbon Ōtepoti look like?

A Zero Carbon future for Dunedin is about more than reducing emissions. It’s about creating a healthier, more connected, and more resilient city while protecting the places we love in Ōtepoti.

The vision describes what life in Ōtepoti Dunedin could look like as the city transitions towards a Zero Carbon future, shaped by the actions of communities, businesses, organisations and local government working together.

Warm, healthy homes and buildings

More people are living in warm, healthy homes that cost less to run. Energy-efficient buildings and cleaner energy sources help households reduce emissions while improving comfort and wellbeing. More businesses and community facilities are also transitioning to cleaner energy.

Better ways to get around

Many people travel by electric buses, bike, or on foot along safer and more pleasant streets. Public transport provides convenient connections within the city and beyond.

Cars are still part of the transport system, but more people are driving electric vehicles or sharing trips with others.

These changes mean cleaner air for Dunedin and more opportunities for people to enjoy the health benefits of walking and cycling.

People-friendly streets and neighbourhoods

Neighbourhood centres are vibrant places where people can access local shops, services, and green spaces. Streets feel safer and more welcoming for walking, cycling, and spending time together. Communities are more connected, fostering social wellbeing and resilience.

A thriving low-carbon economy

Businesses in Dunedin are supported and empowered to reduce their emissions. Many are embracing new opportunities in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Waste is reduced, resources are reused, and innovation is helping create new jobs and industries across the city.

Connected to nature

Communities are better connected to each other and to the natural environment that makes Ōtepoti special – from our harbour and coastline to the forests, mountains and wildlife that define our place.

This vision reflects the direction Ōtepoti Dunedin is moving towards as the city works to reduce emissions and build a resilient future. Achieving it will require action and collaboration across businesses, communities, organisations, and local government. Many of these changes are already beginning to take shape across Dunedin.
