Dunedin City Council (DCC) is working on several waste management projects. These projects overlap in many ways, so we’ve gathered them under the one ‘Waste Futures’ banner.
We're planning:
- redevelopment of the Resource Recovery Park beside the Green Island Landfill, starting in late 2025.
- the closure of Green Island Landfill around 2029 - 2030.
- construction of a new landfill at Smooth Hill, south of the city.
We have completed:
- a full review and update of the 2020 DCC Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, now approved as the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2025.
- introducing kerbside food scraps/garden waste bin collection along with a wheelie bin for rubbish, replacing the plastic rubbish bags. See the media release from July 2024.
- a mid-2023 extension of kerbside recycling and rubbish collection services to include Berwick, Woodside, Henley and Pukehiki.
- changing the tertiary area kerbside service, so all bins are collected every week, to help keep the area safe and tidy (we are a Sophia Charter signatory).
It’s a great opportunity to develop a more coordinated waste management system for our city that progressively reduces our waste and lowers our carbon emissions.
Everyone in Dunedin produces waste, so everyone is affected by the outcome of these projects.
