CoastSnap is a community science project designed and implemented by Water Research Laboratory at the University of New South Wales.
Be a part of shoreline monitoring and management
Monitoring energetic beaches provides great insight into the major changes occurring before/after extreme events such as storms. Proper understanding of these changes will help stakeholders make informed decisions in the face of fast-approaching climate-induced impacts.
The coastal team at Dunedin City Council has partnered with CoastSnap to involve the community in shoreline monitoring and management, starting with Ocean Beach.
The collected images provide a record of the coastline as it evolves. The technology behind CoastSnap is then capable of creating time-lapse videos and tracking the precise changes in the position of the coastline over time.
How it works
- Place your phone on the CoastSnap cradle. There is no need need to use filters or zoom.
- Share it on the CoastSnap app available on Google Play and App Store. Or, email it to us at coastsnap@otago.ac.nz. You can also share it on social media using specific hashtags for each cradle (make sure to include the exact date and time the photo was taken).
- Once the images are geo-referenced and rectified, we can project them in a NZTM coordinate system before comparing them to previous images to identify changes in shoreline position. This approach allows defining seasonal/inter-annual and storm event patterns of shoreline erosion/accretion.
Where to find the cradles along the St Clair to St Kilda coast
We have installed three cradles to begin with:
St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool: You can find the cradle on the handrail.
St Clair seawall: You can find the cradle at the end of the esplanade.
Lawyers Head: You can find the cradle before the lookout on the right.
