City service and city project grants

City Service, City Project grants support key organisations and projects to help the city achieve its strategic goals and ultimately ensure Dunedin is one of the world's great small cities.

The grants were introduced in 2015, replacing the previous Civic Grants. Funding is for core operating costs.

We strongly recommend talking with a Community Advisor or Ara Toi Relationship Advisor before you apply.

Who can apply - City service grants

  • Organisations that meet all of the following criteria –
  • Their work in the city significantly contributes to achieving the priorities of one or more of our key strategies, and due to this they have a unique service / place within community or are considered a peak body.
  • They are deemed critical to Dunedin's community fabric and longer-term sustainability.
  • They can show they have community support, collaborate and build partnerships with other organisations.
  • They have effective and efficient governance that have a presence in Dunedin.

Who can apply - City project grants

  • Funding requests that qualify for consideration will be in line with the Community Grants and Arts Grants criteria.
  • Events are not eligible for funding under this scheme but organisers can apply for an Events grant (visit our Events funding page).

Who can apply - City service Arts grants

Applications will only be accepted from a formally constituted organisation.

Your organisation must:

  • Significantly contribute to achieving the strategic objectives of Ara Toi Ōtepoti and other city strategies.
  • Provide a unique service for creative practitioners and the wider city community.
  • Be critical to the long-term sustainability of Ōtepoti’s creative ecosystem.
  • Demonstrate community support.
  • Build partnerships and collaborate with other organisations.
  • Have effective and efficient governance with a presence in Dunedin.

How much are the grants?

In 2022, $455,800 was awarded to 20 organisations with, an average amount of $19,817.39.

If your application is successful you will be required to complete an accountability report for the DCC.  Please check the accountability form to ensure you are collecting the right information to be able to complete this.
