Animals found on the road

If roading contractors find dead pets, the pet will be taken to a veterinary clinic, where it will be checked for a microchip and stored securely.

We will keep records of dead dogs found on the road. If the dog is microchipped, we will try to contact the owner. If your dog is missing, please call both the DCC and the SPCA.

The records of dead cats and other animals found on the road will be kept by the SPCA, and they will try to contact the owners of microchipped cats. If you have lost a cat or other animal, please contact the SPCA directly.

Most pets are found using social media, posters and community awareness. Our process is designed to support these efforts by ensuring dead pets can be returned to their families.

If an animal is not microchipped or the owner cannot be contacted, the animal will be kept for a week and then cremated.

We will review this process over time to make sure it is working well. If you have any feedback or questions, please email us on, or phone us on +64 3 477 4000.
