Dunedin’s central city is a bustling hub which provides a focal point for residents and visitors. To make sure it remains the heart of the city, we need to make the most of what we have and develop new opportunities.
The Dunedin Central City Plan is designed to guide development of the central city area for the next 10-15 years. It establishes a vision for the central city area through a series of initiatives and changes. The focus is the safety and accessibility of public spaces and creating compelling, attractive spaces where people want to spend time.
The design and planning of an outstanding city centre relies on everyone working together, including business owners, the public sector and residents, to come up with the best ideas.
The Quarters
The Central City Plan is divided into “quarters”. These quarters are intended to reflect the different types of activities that occur in these parts of the city, encourage certain types of development into certain areas, and help to foster a distinctive character in each.
The Warehouse Precinct was the first quarter to be developed with projects yet to be completed. Now we are moving to revitalise the Retail Quarter.
