The school gate is a busy place during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Our tamariki and rakatahi travel to school in lots of different ways – some walk or take the bus, some cycle or scoot, and others are driven in cars.
When lots of vehicles and people are moving around in the same area, crashes can happen. We want to ensure school zones are safe for children, whānau and everybody in the community.
Lower speed limits around schools mean more time to react and avoid crashes. They also reduce the risk of serious injury and death when crashes do occur.
School zones and speed limits
In Dunedin, some schools sit within a permanent 30km/h speed zone.
Other schools have variable speed zones, where the speed limit is reduced to 30km/h before and after school. The reduced speed limits apply from 8.00am to 9.15am and 2.45pm to 3.45pm on school days.
Each school zone includes school entrances and surrounding streets. You can see individual school speed zones on the National Speed Limit Register map.
Please note: St Mary’s School (Dunedin) has part variable and part permanent speed zones.
