Coastal Dune Reserves Management Plan review

We are inviting the community to have its say on the future management of 10 of the city's coastal dune reserves.

Feedback will help inform a review of the Coastal Dune Reserves Management Plan 2010, which guides how these important public spaces are protected, managed and enjoyed.

The coastal dune reserves around Dunedin are enjoyed and appreciated by many people. They also provide an important natural buffer between the sea and the land behind.

The DCC is seeking feedback on what people value about the coastal dune reserves, how they use them, what works well and where improvements could be made. This includes ideas about recreation, environmental restoration, public access, facilities, cultural values and the long-term management of these coastal environments.

Your feedback will help shape a draft Plan, which will be subject to further public consultation later in 2027.

The Coastal Dune Reserves Management Plan applies to the following reserves:

  • Brighton Reserve
  • Island Park Reserve
  • Karitane Esplanade Reserves
  • Kuri Bush Reserve
  • Long Beach Reserve
  • Ocean Grove Reserve
  • Ocean View Reserve
  • Te Rauone Reserve
  • Waikouaiti Domain (beachfront) and Karitane Spit
  • Warrington Reserve

Te Rauone Reserve is not included in this review. Its management has recently been addressed through the Otago Harbour Reserves Management Plan, and it will continue to be managed within that framework.

The reserves covered by this review are located within the jurisdictions of four Community Boards: Saddle Hill, Otago Peninsula, West Harbour, and Waikouaiti Coast. These Community Boards will be invited to participate throughout the review process.
