Qingdao is a coastal city of about three million people in the urban city and eight million in the provincial centre.
Situated in the Shandong Province, on the eastern seaboard, it’s known for its tourism attractions, including its famous Qingdao Brewery and its beaches. It is also a major seaport, naval base and industrial centre.
Friendship City Relationship Background
The city first developed a relationship with Qingdao in October 2013 when a delegation from Qingdao visited the city. During that visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a trade and commercial focus was signed between Enterprise Dunedin and their Bureau of Commerce. Qingdao was seen as an important city for Dunedin to develop a relationship with because Haier, who had recently acquired Fisher & Paykel, had their head offices in Qingdao, and Scott Technology, one of Dunedin’s leading manufacturers, also has a plant in the Qingdao Province.
Further visits and ongoing communication have led to the latest developments in the relationship. In October 2014, Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull signed a Memorandum of Understanding of the Establishment of Friendly Co-operative Relations with Qingdao, a city status that sits one tier below a sister city status. On the same visit, Enterprise Dunedin also signed an MoU with the Qingdao Municipal Tourism Administration.
