Parking on footpaths

Our city has a lot of narrow streets where it is necessary to allow vehicles to partially park on the footpath.

Parking vehicles with two wheels on the footpath ensures that emergency vehicles can still access these narrow streets, while maintaining the ability for residents and their visitors to park near their homes.

After an assessment of narrow road sections around Dunedin City we have identified 22 sections of road where partially parking a vehicle with two wheels on the footpath is allowed.

Why can’t I park on the footpath everywhere?

Vehicles parked illegally on the footpath can block pedestrians, often forcing them into the road to pass the vehicle. This is of particular concern for people in wheelchairs or with pushchairs, or people with mobility or vision impairments.

If you are concerned about a vehicle illegally parked on the footpath, phone us on +64 3 477 4000.
