Rural recycling hubs

Dunedin city boundaries stretch far and wide which means some residents living in rural or satellite areas do not have ready access to DCC’s kerbside collection service for recycling.

Rural recycling hubs

Because recycling is becoming an increasingly important issue in our community, and the demand for recycling services continues to grow, a solution was sought to provide remote communities with the opportunity to recycle.

Partnerships between DCC and community established three recycling hubs in host locations. The host is a local community group or organisation who has agreed to oversee the hub in their area to ensure it is being used correctly, while the DCC provides the hub and the collection service. The host also uses local networks for communications to support good recycling practice.

Middlemarch community recycling hub

This recycling hub is located in the car park at the back of the Kissing Gate Café at 5 South Road. Residents in the greater Strath Taieri area, currently not receiving the DCC’s kerbside collection service, are encouraged to use this recycling hub.

Lee Stream community recycling hub

This recycling hub is located behind Lee Stream Community Hall, next to Lee Stream School on Clarks Junction-Lee Stream Road (coming from Outram, just before George King Memorial Drive).

Hoopers Inlet community recycling hub

This recycling hub is located at the entrance of the Hoopers Inlet Hall on Allans Beach Road, Cape Saunders. Coming from Portobello, continue on Allans Beach Road turning left once at Hoopers Inlet. Hoopers Inlet Hall is approximately 100m on the left.

The following recyclable products can be dropped off at any of the community recycling hubs:

Glass

Glass collection pods or bottle banks are provided for the collection colour sorted glass i.e; brown, clear and green.

  • Glass should be unbroken and should have been rinsed out.
  • Only glass bottles and jars can be accepted, not other glass products such as mirrors or sheet glass.
  • Lids MUST be removed.

Please do not deposit window glass, drinking glasses, light bulbs or crockery in these containers. The composition of this glass differs greatly. This must be treated as contaminated in the recycling process.

For more information please refer to www.visy.com.au/packaging/glass (link to external website, new window)

Mixed recycling

Yellow-lidded mixed recycling bins are provided for the collection of:

  • rigid plastics 1, 2 and 5 ONLY (lids removed)
  • metal tins and cans; and
  • paper and flattened cardboard.

Please do not deposit polystyrene, aluminium foil, aerosol spray cans, soft plastics (e.g. plastic bags) or general waste in these bins.

Whether you’re a local or visitor to any one of the community recycling hubs listed below, please take care to recycle correctly. The success of hosted hubs depends on all those who use them. Please keep your recycling free from contamination and do not leave general waste at these sites.

Pop-up transfer stations

The rural skip days previously provided to residents for disposing of waste have come to an end.

This is due to their high cost and declining use. The skip events will not be offered following this year’s winter series.

We know this news will be disappointing for some. For those unsure of their options, there are some alternative ways of disposing of waste and recycling.

Try making the most of the kerbside collection service, taking larger items to the Green Island Landfill or other transfer stations, or donating quality items to local charity shops.

Waste minimisation grants may be available to community organisations wanting to host swap or sell landfill diversion events in their communities.
