Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Three Dunedin City Council waste management projects have begun simultaneously. Three projects overlap in many ways and, given their shared timing, we’ve gathered them under the one ‘Waste Futures’ banner.

Three Dunedin City Council waste management projects have begun simultaneously:

  • DCC Waste Minimisation and Management Plan 2013 (WMMP) review – updating the plan that sets out how to promote effective and efficient waste minimisation and management in Dunedin.
  • Reducing organics going to landfill - an investigation into options for reducing the amount of Dunedin’s organic (food and/or green) waste going to Green Island Landfill, including kerbside organics collection.
  • Preparing for Green Island Landfill’s closure – the land fill is due to reach the end of its functional life sometime between 2023 and 2028.

These three projects overlap in many ways and, given their shared timing, we’ve gathered them under the one ‘Waste Futures’ banner. The DCC will be seeking input from Dunedin’s community in the coming year about the best options for meeting the challenges within each project.

This is a great opportunity to develop a more coordinated waste management system for our city that progressively reduces our rubbish and lowers our carbon emissions.
