Parking meters around our city use Pay By Plate technology.
Pay By Plate is a parking system that uses your vehicle’s licence plate number to identify your parking, rather than a paper ticket.
Used by many city councils around New Zealand, Pay By Plate parking is faster, more reliable and more environmentally friendly than the old parking system, and ensures Dunedin is keeping up with modern parking technology.
How do I use the Pay By Plate parking meters?
Using Pay By Plate is as easy as entering your vehicle’s licence plate number into the meter, selecting how long you want to park for, and then paying the fee. Your vehicle’s licence plate number is used to confirm your parking has been paid.
You can pay for parking using:
- Coins
- Debit or credit card
- The PayMyPark App, available in the iPhone Apple Store or Google Play.
After you’ve paid for your parking, the screen will display “transaction completed.” If you don’t see that screen, your licence plate number hasn’t been registered or paid for and you may be liable for a parking infringement. Make sure you don’t rush off before you see the confirmation!
If you aren’t familiar with your licence plate number, or have multiple to remember, you might want to record it in your phone or wallet. If you use the PayMyPark app, you can store licence plate numbers which you can select when you pay for parking using the app.

What if I need a receipt?
When you pay for parking, the parking meter will display a four-digit code. Take a photo on your phone or write it down and go to www.my-receipt.com (link to external website, new window) where you can request or print an electronic receipt.
You can do this when you want a one-off receipt, or you can register at my-receipt.com to have all future receipts emailed to you automatically. You will need to remember your four-digit code from the parking meter when you first set this up.
What do I do if I enter the wrong licence plate number into the parking meter?
If you enter the wrong licence plate number into one of the Pay By Plate parking meters and get an parking infringement, please fill out the parking infringement explanation.
Parking infringement explanationWhat happens to my personal information?
There is no personal information held in the system. The only information the Dunedin City Council (DCC) collects is the vehicle licence plate number, time paid for, amount paid, and method of payment. The DCC may access the information when someone needs a receipt, for enforcement purposes, or when there is a dispute to a parking infringement.
