Oversize vehicles
If your vehicle is larger than a standard vehicle, you may need special permission to drive on certain roads and bridges. The Land Transport Rule 41001: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016 specifies legal weights and axle loads.
In certain situations you will need to apply for an Overweight Permit:
- If your vehicle exceeds ‘Class 1’, i.e. 44 tonnes or certain axle combinations of 45-46 tonnes
- If your vehicle’s axles exceed the legal weight limit
- If you wish to travel on a posted road or bridge
Waka Kotahi issues overweight permits on DCC’s behalf.
Over-dimension vehicles are vehicles which exceed specified height, width or length. Permission is administered by Waka Kotahi.
