CBD recycling collection services

Cardboard collection is available for small businesses in the Central Business District (CBD) and South Dunedin twice a week.

There are 26 convenient cardboard collection points located around the CBD and South Dunedin.

  • Twenty Back of House (BOH) collection bins around the CBD
  • One BOH collection bin in South Dunedin; and
  • Five on-street collection points in South Dunedin.

Collection days are Monday and Thursday between 4pm and 5.30pm each week.

Back of House (BOH) collection points

These sites are generally designated areas at the back of some buildings where cardboard is collected in a bin.

Local businesses need to register to use our cardboard collection service and are then assigned to a specific BOH site to ensure volumes are controlled and to prevent the bins from overflowing. Each business is allocated a set volume allowance, which our team will discuss with you when you have registered.

All cardboard disposed in these bins must be flattened.

If you’d like to register or have any questions about this service, please call us on 03 477 4000.

On-street collection points

There are five on-street collection points in South Dunedin – one on Rankeillor Street, and four along Glasglow Street.

You can place your cardboard collection at any one of these collection points, however, cardboard must:

  • be flattened
  • be tied or taped together
  • be no larger in size than 1m W x 1m L x 300mm H
  • not obstruct pedestrian access.

If cardboard is not secured as above, it may not be collected.

Are there other options for cardboard collection services?

This cardboard collection service is for small businesses which have a small amount of cardboard.

The DCC cardboard collection service may not be the right option for you or your business if you have a large amount of cardboard, or the days or frequency of collection may not suit your needs. If this is the case, we suggest contacting private waste service providers for their waste service options.

If you live in an apartment in the CBD or South Dunedin and have no space for a private bin, talk to your landlord, body corporate or neighbours to discuss possible rubbish collection options e.g., shared service/bins.

Improper rubbish disposal

Please do not leave rubbish bags out for collection. This is considered illegal dumping which is an offence under the DCC Litter Compliance Policy and may result in a fine of $150.

Public recycling and rubbish bins are provided for people shopping or using services around the CBD. Do not dispose of business or household waste in these bins, as this is also an offence under the DCC Litter Compliance Policy and may result in a fine of $100.
