Sonya Billyard

I have lived in Waikouaiti for over 23 years, after spending seven years in Karitane and seven years in Merton. Originally from Dunedin, I feel deeply connected to our wider coastal community, having raised three children here, two of whom now live overseas, sparking my love of travel and appreciation for home.

For the past 19 years, I have worked for a place-based organisation in Waikouaiti focused on community engagement, supporting local people and initiatives that strengthen our region. Alongside this, I own a small business specialising in New Zealand-made women’s clothing, allowing me to contribute to and support local enterprise.

I am passionate about the wellbeing and future of our coastal communities - honestly, who would want to live anywhere else.
