Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

We are facilitators in assisting the implementation of the Economic Development Strategy which has been developed to increase skills, incomes, job opportunities and investment in the City.

We are a respected and highly-effective part of the Dunedin business community. Three out of four businesses who use our services recommend us to colleagues as the first place to seek business support.

Whether you are a start-up or established business, we are here to help.

  • We provide impartial professional advice to start up and existing businesses.
  • We design solutions to broker access to local, national and international contacts.
  • We access information, and research and development grants and referrals to grow businesses.
  • We work with clusters such as Engineering, Technology, Tourism and Food and Beverage.
  • We assist skilled migrants and their families to settle successfully in Dunedin.
  • We represent Council at business forums, conferences and events, educating  and advocating  for the city’s economic vision.
  • We aim to ensure that relationships between the businesses, industry and Council are constructive.

From business advice and introductions to people and organisations that may be able to assist, through to helping you negotiate rules and regulations. The Unit is there to help you get your business going.

Where do I start? (link to external website, new window) website was written by a start-up business expert and is well worth a look. The site has free resources, tools and information to help people start, manage and grow their business.

The "Starting up" section has information about:

  • Business structures
  • Writing a business plan
  • Managing cashflow
  • Raising capital
  • Building a promotional plan
  • Getting online.

When you've had a look at this website, give us a call on 03 474 3409 to make a free, private appointment to meet one of our Business Advisors. The Business Clinic appointments take place every Tuesday afternoon/early evening at the Civic Centre, Octagon..

We will be able to map out your steps and make the connections you need to get your business off the ground.

Unfortunately, there is no Government funding available for start-ups, as it tends to require that businesses demonstrate a proven track record. However, we may be able to refer you to suitable investors.
