How to search for a property

Map search box example

Search by either:

  • entering an address into the search box (located on the top left of the map) and then clicking on the correct address that pops up; or
  • dragging your mouse to move the map to the area you are interested in. You can zoom in and out of the map by using the scroll bar on your mouse or using the + and – icons located in the top left of the map.

2GP appeals mapping layer

An appeals mapping layer is included in the 2GP Planning Map. When an area under appeal is clicked on, an ‘Under Appeal’ pop-up will appear. This provides a link to the appeals on the 2GP webpage and provides for the Environment Court Reference for relevant appeals. For certainty, you should refer to the relevant appeal notice or notices on the Appeals on the 2GP page.

The Planning Map

The 2GP Planning Map, together with the 2GP text (ePlan), make up the Operative Dunedin City Second Generation District Plan 2026 (2GP).

The 2GP Planning Map is provided as an electronic map, which is made up of the following four types of information: has four types of spatial mapping ‘layers’:

  • Zones – This is the base or underlying zoning of your land, such as a rural or residential zone. All land is zoned.
  • Overlay zones – These are additional management zones that include rules related to a particular topic, e.g. hazard or landscape overlay zones.
  • Mapped areas – These are areas where particular standards apply, e.g. the Taieri Aerodrome flight fan (the airspace where aeroplanes take off and land).
  • Scheduled items – These are items such as trees and heritage buildings, and/or areas such as designations or archaeological sites, that have particular rules attached to them.

The base layer in the Planning Map is the ‘zone’ (for example, the General Residential 1 Zone). All land in Dunedin has a base land use zone. The zone your property is in determines what use you can put your land to without needing a resource consent. The standards for subdivision and development also  vary between zones.

In some cases, the land may also be subject to ‘overlay zones’. Overlay zones are additional management zones that include rules related to a particular topic, e.g. landscape features or natural hazards. Land may also be subject to ‘mapped areas’ where particular standards apply, or scheduled items  such as protected trees or heritage buildings.
