Tracks and trails around Dunedin

This map indicates the location of tracks and trails around Dunedin City.

Dunedin is blessed with a number of outstanding recreational tracks and its track network is the envy of many other cities.  From simple strolls near streams and along beaches to clambers above the snowline in sub-alpine environments, there are tracks to meet all tastes. There's an opportunity to walk in bush, ramble through farmland, ride along the sky line and through exotic forests, and cross-country ski all within the city boundary.

The majority of the tracks are not signed or way marked; they are indistinct ground trails that require strong navigational skills. This data is the best available at the time of publication. The information offered here comes from different sources (GPS, aerial photos, topographic maps) and as a result has varying degrees of accuracy. It is intended as a general guide only and should not be used for accurate navigation purposes. It does not grade the tracks for difficulty nor does it indicate their current condition. Some of the tracks may be walked or ridden with ease; others will require full tramping equipment or long carries of your bike.

There is still a lot of work to do on the tracks information to get descriptions, classifications, walking times etc onto the map. We will regularly update this map and if you have more accurate GPS data we welcome you to contact us.

We are also referring you to other publications as the existence of a track on the map does not imply you have a right of access. At certain times of the year tracks may be closed for farming or fire safety purposes.

Helpful hint; at times a track on the street map appears to finish with no connection. Have a look at the aerial as there will be a connection most probably a four wheel drive track. An example of this is Highcliff track linking to McMeeking Rd.
