This page outlines several road safety initiatives that the Council and community organisations in Dunedin have engaged throughout the years.
The Dunedin City Council works with a number of government agencies to deliver road safety education in the Dunedin region. This partnership is guided by the Dunedin Road Safety Action Plan and the New Zealand Government’s Road to Zero: New Zealand’s Road Safety Strategy 2020-2030. This strategy was launched in 2019 adopting the vision ‘a New Zealand where no one is killed or seriously injured in road crashes. This means that no death or serious injury while travelling on our roads is acceptable.’

Every year in New Zealand, adverse weather conditions contribute to crashes on our roads. However, bad weather seldom causes crashes. Crashes generally occur because people haven’t adjusted their driving to take weather conditions into account.
Driving requires your full attention; you need to control your vehicle while being aware of your surroundings and looking out for potential hazards. Distraction is a common factor in many crashes.
Dunedin has a number of shared paths around the city. Shared paths are for all users, of all kinds of mobility including people walking, cycling, scootering and mobility devices. No user has priority over the other, the paths are all about sharing the space together.
