2026 Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp

Opportunity overview

Since 2009, the Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp (the Youth Camp) has welcomed over 1,700 students and teachers from 42 sister cities across 37 countries. The annual Youth Camp provides an immersive experience to deepen cultural understanding while building friendships to last a lifetime.

2026 Youth Camp

The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission is inviting five Dunedin high school students and one teacher to attend the Youth Camp from 4 – 17 July 2026. Participants will meet students from around the world, visit major attractions, and experience Chinese culture through organised activities. All on-the-ground costs in Shanghai - including accommodation, meals, and local transport - are fully covered.

Eligibility

To apply, an applicant must:

  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident living in Dunedin and hold a valid passport (minimum six months validity from arrival in China, with at least two blank pages).
  • Be available to travel to China in July 2026 and arrange your own return flights and travel insurance.
  • Have an interest in Chinese language and culture and be willing to share necessary personal information to travel safely as a group (including relevant medical details).
  • Obtain a valid visa if required (for non NZ passport holders or nationalities not eligible for visa free entry).
  • Students: currently be enrolled full time at a Dunedin high school (Years 11 - 13).
  • Teachers: currently be employed at a Dunedin high school.
