Our cycle counter dashboard tracks the data gathered from 20 permanent cycle counters along Ōtepoti Dunedin’s cycleways.
The counters track the trips people make as they pass each counter’s location in either direction, providing a sample of the trips people make across our city’s network of cycleways. Out of the 20 permanent counters across the city, 11 of these are also capable of capturing pedestrian movements.
Cycle counters were first installed in 2014, with additional counters added as our cycleway network has expanded. The data available through this dashboard goes back to 1 January 2022 to highlight the growing usage of cycleways over this time.
The cycle counters on Cumberland Street and Great King Street along State Highway 1 are managed by Waka Kotahi NZTA (New Zealand Transport Agency).
How to use this dashboard
Choose the date range for analysis by selecting it at the top of the dashboard. You can break down the data by travel mode e.g. by bike or by foot, by selecting these on the top left. Data for each individual counter location can be selected by either clicking on the map, or on the list to the right. You’ll notice fluctuations in numbers seasonally, or during times like the school holidays.
Please note that our cycle counter sensors are unable to count bikes with carbon fibre wheel frames and hubs. Metal bikes will be counted.
Our counters may experience some downtime due to occasional operational issues, but these faults are monitored and fixed as soon as possible.
