Sustainable travel events

Dunedin's population is growing and our city is changing. We want to support Dunedin residents and visitors to make better choices when it comes to travelling around the city. Historically, Dunedin's transport network was designed to give high priority to motor vehicles over other modes. It can often feel daunting to try something new, so we've put together a schedule of events in Dunedin that support and encourage alternative travel modes. These events support infrastructure and public transport changes and hope to build a critical mass of active and shared transport users.

    Aotearoa Bike Challenge

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge (link to external website, new window) is a fun, free competition each February that’s all about seeing which workplaces can get the most people to ride a bike for just 10 minutes or more. Join the challenge and log your rides in February!

  • Bike Breakfast

    Aotearoa Bike Challenge

As part of the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, Spokes Dunedin hosts an annual Bike Breakfast event, which is supported by the Dunedin City Council.

This year’s event is at the Railway Station on Tuesday 18th February 2025 from 7.00am - 10.00am. This is a waste free event so be sure to bring your own cup and bowl. Bike House will be running a free e-bike demo and providing free 5-minute bike tune-ups at the event.

  • Move it March

    Walk and Wheel Week

During March, school children across Ōtepoti Dunedin are being encouraged to walk or wheel (skate, scoot, cycle) to school, either with a parent or individually as appropriate. This month-long event is run by Dunedin City Council and is a FREE event open to all Dunedin primary schools.

Move it March aims to make active travel to and from school a healthy habit, reducing congestion at the school gate, encouraging student wellbeing, and reducing emissions. Move it March makes active travel fun!

Check with your school to make sure they’re registered so your kids don’t miss out on the huge array of prizes on offer!

  • Walk2Work Day

    Walk2Work

This year Walk2Work Day is on Wednesday 12th March 2025. To celebrate and encourage people walking to work, the DCC is running a photo competition.

Send us a photo of you strutting your stuff with a catchy caption and be in to win one of four pairs of running shoes (a $250 voucher for Smiths Shoes).

To enter, on Walk2Work Day, send your photo including a caption to transport@dcc.govt.nz.

We understand that not everyone can walk all the way to work, so photos could also be of you walking part of your journey, walking the kids to school, running an errand, or walking for any other journeys you might take on the day.

Walk2Work Day is happening on the same day as Walk or Wheel to school day. We’re encouraging parents to consider walking, cycling, or scooting to school with their kids and then continuing to work. If you live too far away to try this, consider checking out the bus schedule to see if you could hop on the bus after dropping your kids at school. The Dunedin bus schedule can be found here: Dunedin bus timetables

If the buses don’t suit, download the Flamingo App and see where the closest electric scooter is near you, and ride some or all of the way to work -  Dunedin | Flamingo

  • Family Bike Day

Family Bike Day is held at the end of October at Marlow Park and is organised by DCC and Plunket to encourage safe cycling in Ōtepoti Dunedin. Bring or ride your bike to Marlow Park and practice your cycling skills on the road inspired track or the modular pump track.

There will be a whole range of free family bike activities including bike servicing, bike decorating, face painting, helmet checks, a sausage sizzle and coffee. With spot prizes for families that bike to the event, there’s non-stop fun for the whole family. Don’t forget your helmet!

  • Time to Shine

    Rowing Club

Time to Shine events take place around day light savings in ngahuru/autumn. Events consist of pop-up stalls located at popular active commuting sites during morning commuting times in and around Ōtepoti Dunedin.

The focus of these pop-up stalls is to encourage active commuters to wear bright clothes and/or use lights in order to ‘shine’ and be visible during a time of year that is particularly dark and can be dangerous for those using active modes.
