Intersection safety

In the last five years, over a third of serious crashes in the Dunedin region have happened at intersections.

Not giving way to others because of poor observation (not seeing the other party) and distraction are a leading cause of crashes at intersections.

Intersections require your full attention.

  • Be aware of your speed
  • Be alert to other people using the intersection, this includes people on bikes and motorbikes as well as pedestrians who may be crossing the road.
  • Don’t squeeze the orange. If the light turns orange, stop if it is safe to do so, don’t try and squeeze through.

Don’t block the intersection. Only enter the intersection if you can make it through clearly.
