Shared Path Guidelines

Dunedin has a number of shared paths around the city. Shared paths are for all users, of all kinds of mobility including people walking, cycling, scootering and mobility devices. No user has priority over the other, the paths are all about sharing the space together.

Below are some guidelines for using the paths to make it a safe and enjoyable journey:

  • Be Heard – cyclists give your bell a friendly ring to alert pedestrians of your presence, give them plenty of warning so you don’t give them a fright
  • Listen Out – pedestrians listen out for cyclists ringing their bell, you may not hear them if you are using noise cancelling headphones
  • Keep Close – if you are walking your dog keep the lead short and the dog close. It’s not easy to see those extended leads, which is a hazard to those passing you
  • Keep Left – keeping to the left of the path allows room for others to pass you, and it also helps avoid conflict when coming around blind corners
  • Be Considerate – it is important to look out for others, slow down, and pass with care.
