Walk or cycle through a historic railway tunnel and discover a unique piece of Otago's rail heritage on this easy, family-friendly trail near Wingatui.

About this track

Step back in time and explore one of Dunedin's newest heritage trail experiences. The Chain Hills Tunnel Track follows a section of the former railway corridor and takes visitors through the historic Chain Hills Tunnel, which originally formed part of the Main South railway line. The trail offers a flat, easy walk through a fully restored railway tunnel and surrounding rail cutting, providing a unique glimpse into Otago's engineering history.

The Chain Hills Tunnel Track is the first completed section of the Dunedin Tunnels Trail, a long-term project to connect Mosgiel and Dunedin through a series of historic Victorian-era railway tunnels. To find out more follow this link: Dunedin tunnels trail project.
