About this track

Linking Smaills Beach and Karetai Road, the Karetai Track follows an historic public road that winds through open farmland to reveal breath-taking views of the Otago coastline. Along the way, you’ll pass old stone walls and rolling hillsides, making this a perfect spot for a relaxed evening walk or a scenic photo stop.

For those keen to explore further, the Karetai Track connects with the Highcliff Tracks network, offering opportunities to venture deeper into the stunning landscapes of the Otago Peninsula.

Directions

At the end of Tomahawk Road, park at the Smaills Beach carpark and walk up Karetai Road to the start of the track. Alternatively, park at the top of the track on Karetai Road and walk down to Smaills Beach.

From the Centre of town, catch the Number 3 Bus all the way to its terminus. You will need to walk an additional 18 minutes (1.2km) to the track start.
