Climb through native bush and rolling hills to the summit of Flagstaff on Dunedin's iconic Pineapple Track. With sweeping views over the city, Otago Harbour, and the Pacific Ocean, this trail offers a perfect mix of nature and panoramic vistas.

About this track

The Pineapple Track is one of Dunedin's most beloved trails, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and stunning vistas. Starting from the base of Flagstaff, the track winds through lush native bush before climbing to the open tussock hills that lead to the summit. Along the way, you’ll be treated to ever-expanding views of the city, Otago Harbour, and the shimmering expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

The trail is rich in history, its unusual name dating back to the early 20th century when tinned pineapples were offered as refreshments on hiking tours. Though you won’t find pineapples along the way today, the track remains a refreshing escape from city life.

As you ascend, the dense greenery of ferns and kanuka gradually gives way to windswept grasslands, providing a sense of openness and tranquillity. The summit of Flagstaff rewards your efforts with a breathtaking panorama, where you can take in the sweep of Dunedin’s coastline, the peninsula’s rolling contours, and the vibrant city below.

The Pineapple Track is suitable for a range of fitness levels and offers a variety of entry points, making it an accessible adventure for locals and visitors alike. Whether you're looking for a quick climb or a longer exploration of Dunedin's natural beauty, this track promises a rewarding experience and unforgettable views.

Directions

Begin the trail on Booth Road or from the Bullring carpark on the Flagstaff-Whare Flat Road. There is parking at both ends.

Public Transport: Bus Route 3 – take the bus to the stop on Glenmore Street, opposite 6 (the Ross Creek direction) and walk up Fulton Road for 200m to the beginning of the track.

Know before you go:

When you ascend out of the forest, the hills can be very exposed. Bring extra layers.
