About this track

Flagstaff Track is a short but steep 40-minute walk that provides a way up or down Flagstaff and can be used as one of several alternative starts to Silverpeak backcountry trail network. Beginning at the carpark known as the Bull Ring on Flagstaff Whare Flat Road. Take the well gravelled track to the east through manuka scrub, which slowly transitions into tussock land. As you walk up the track, you’ll be rewarded with views of rolling hills covered in tussock to the west and Dunedin to east. Once you reach the geodatum marker at the top of flagstaff, a plane table installed by the Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club in 1973 will highlight the different surrounding peaks and geographical features. From the top of Flagstaff, you can continue on to other tracks including the flagstaff fire break track that loops back to the Bull Ring.
