Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Move It March inspires children to get active

From next week, around 6,000 youngsters from 34 Ōtepoti Dunedin schools are set to walk, scoot, bike or bus their way to and from school to celebrate Move It March.

Move It March is a Dunedin City Council initiative that aims to make active travel to and from school a healthy habit.

“This helps to build confidence, increase alertness at school, and has the wider benefit of reducing congestion and emissions around the school gates,” says Jeanine Benson, DCC Group Manager Transport.

“Because of all the extra activity, we’re asking drivers to take extra care around schools, especially on Wednesday 11 March, which is Walk and Wheel Day.”

The theme of this Walk and Wheel Day is Be Bright, Be Seen, a message which aims to keep school zones safe for children, whānau and everybody in the community.

Scout, the Safe and Active Travel mascot, will be visiting schools throughout the month, joining in with walking school buses in the mornings and lunchtime scooter sessions.
