Keep Dunedin Beautiful

Keep Dunedin Beautiful (KDB) is a Charitable Trust and a branch of the larger organisation: Keep New Zealand Beautiful (link to external website, new window). KDB provides and supports community-based activities and education programmes in partnership with the Dunedin City Council (DCC).

The DCC encourages kaitiakitaka (guardianship, stewardship) by aligning with groups to support mutual kaupapa (purposes). The DCC employs a KDB Coordinator as part of the Community Partnerships team to support volunteers and community groups in planning and running environmental and beautification activities. These includes tree plantings, street and beach clean-ups, community awards, and providing educational information about waste reduction, living sustainably, and opportunities to beautify the city through public art.

KDB’s mahi (work) aims to inspire and motivate people to participate in the restoration, care, and protection of our local environment.

Their goals include:

  • Encouraging civic pride in the built and natural environment.
  • Educating the community about minimising their waste.
  • Encouraging and coordinating volunteer work for the environment.

Key events

Trees For Families

Trees for Families is an annual native tree planting event, usually held on Mother’s Day (May) or Father’s Day (September) each year. It is a wonderful way to mark a significant family milestone, like a birth, marriage, graduation, anniversary, or to commemorate a loved one.
It is a short one-hour event, held in one of Dunedin’s beautiful green spaces. You can register your interest for the next event using the online form.

Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards

Keep Dunedin Beautiful Awards is an annual event, usually held between June and August, which celebrates local legends. KDB acknowledges those who are putting in the mahi (work) to help beautify and look after Ōtepoti Dunedin through volunteer action or sustainable business practices.

Nominations are opened to the public a month prior to the Awards event, seeking nominations within four categories: schools, businesses, individuals, and community groups.

Examples of nominees:

  • Clean-up groups.
  • Muralists.
  • Tree plantings.
  • Trapping programmes.
  • Waste minimisation and upcycling projects.
  • Home-grown kai and community gardens.

National Clean-up Week

Keep New Zealand Beautiful National Clean-up Week is held in September each year. The event encourages everyone to get out and tidy up their small corner of Aotearoa across the week.

In partnership with DCC and Waste Management, KDB supports local groups by providing:

  • Clean-up gear such as reusable gloves, reusable collection sacks, rubbish grabbers, and hi-viz vests.
  • Support in choosing a location, coordinating logistics (e.g., developing a health and safety plan), and helping with rubbish removal.

Keep an eye on KDB’s Facebook page (link to external website, new window) for more information as this annual event approaches.
