About the track

The Mt Cargill Walking Track offers a rewarding journey through diverse landscapes, starting in Bethunes Valley. The well-maintained trail takes you through a peaceful pine forest and into native bush, where you’ll pass by impressive Hall’s Totara and Rimu trees along the way.

As you climb higher, the dense forest gradually gives way to the alpine zone, with scrub and grassland featuring Manuka, Coprosma, Flax, Veronica, Dracophyllum, and Ozothamnus. Listen for the songs of Tui and Bellbirds and watch for Wood Pigeons enjoying berries in the treetops.

The track finishes at the summit of Mt Cargill, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of Dunedin and the surrounding areas—a perfect reward for the climb.

Pro tip: For an epic day walk, tag on the Organ Pipes track for a truly spectacular track experience.
