Dunedin development history map

The map below was created to look at how Dunedin has grown. It is an adaptation of one showing New York’s construction history.

The data comes from the DCC’s rating database but is not 100% accurate or comprehensive. It is based on buildings that are still standing, so is likely to underestimate the number of early buildings. It also overlooks the pre-European history, which does not come through in this data. However, it still provides a useful rough history of Dunedin’s built form. For example, it shows the expansion of Mosgiel from the late 1950s and the sudden development of Halfway Bush in the 1950s and Brockville in the 1960s.

To use the map, press the ‘Play’ button in the bottom-right corner. It can be paused (using the same button), zoomed in or out (using the mouse scroll wheel or the +/-buttons in the top-left corner), or moved around (by clicking and dragging the left mouse button).
