Waikouaiti the birth place of European settlement in Otago is a dormitory suburb at the northern gateway to the City of Dunedin. It has a reputation for being a popular place with visitors.
Waikouaiti's proximity to the coast and river, along with the golf course, sports ground, and events centre makes it an ideal destination for a wide range of recreational users. The Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre is both a museum and information centre and provides information for visitors about the areas heritage, accommodation, local attractions, tourism opportunities, and guidance for those wishing to travel along Dunedin's Coastal Scenic Route through Karitane, Warrington, and Waitati.
A rural centre in its own right Waikouaiti's location on State Highway One contributes to the township's commercial activity. Businesses here include a grocery store, bakery, saddler, hardware store, petrol station, garages, fish and chip shop, second hand stores, Hotel, Motel, Camping ground, café, fashion clothing store, arts and craft stores, real estate services, doctors, and veterinary services.
