Dunedin City Council invites tenders for Marlow Park playground upgrade

The Dunedin City Council (DCC) is inviting tenders for the Marlow Park destination playground upgrade, a project aimed at creating a modern, inclusive space for the community to enjoy for generations to come.

The DCC is seeking a lead contractor to take the project from concept design through to completion of physical works. This will include refining the design in collaboration with DCC and the Aukaha design team, undertaking detailed design and construction planning, then delivering the build.

As part of its 9 Year Plan 2025-2034 deliberations in January 2025, Council voted to include $4.62 million for the design and build of the Marlow Park upgrade.

The successful contractor is expected to finalise designs through a series of intensive workshops, and present a concept design for Council approval by the end of September. Construction is intended to be completed by 30 June 2027.

The contractor will finalise procurement of a mixture of bespoke and standard play equipment, undertake safety and structural assessments, as well as lead construction, landscaping and installation.

The contractor will help define options and costs in regards the dinosaur slide, for which there are currently two options being considered:

One is to upgrade and incorporate it within a new setting, including a “prehistoric forest” of towers and nature-inspired elements; the other is to replace it with a new dinosaur slide or dinosaur-themed apparatus. This could also be integrated with new towers and design elements suggestive of prehistoric Aotearoa fauna.

DCC Project Lead Dr Glen Hazelton says, “This project is an exciting opportunity to reimagine one of Dunedin’s most loved playgrounds. We’re looking for a partner who can deliver an innovative, inclusive space that reflects our community and will be enjoyed for many years to come.”

“The lead contractor will be crucial in helping define specific costs, which will in turn inform the plan. We will work with the lead contractor to ensure the plan is achievable within the budget we have and to ensure we meet all safety, technical and environmental requirements.”

Tender submissions are now open.
