Work to help alleviate Surrey Street wet weather overflows

Work is set to begin on the latest short-term improvement designed to help alleviate wet weather overflows in Surrey Street.

The project involves construction of a new link connecting existing sewers at the intersection of Surrey Street/Macandrew St and at the south end of Surrey Street.

Dunedin City Council 3 Waters Network Operations Manager Neva Vaitupu says the $240,000 project is scheduled to begin on 7 April and take about a month.

The work will involve excavations at the Surrey Street and Macandrew Road intersection, and along Surrey Street, to install the new pipe connecting the two foul sewer lines. A new manhole will also be added.

Surrey Street will be closed from 7-17 April, followed by the closure of the Surrey Street/Macandrew Road intersection from 20–30 April. Temporary traffic management will be in place.

Affected residents, schools and businesses in the area – as well as the Otago Regional Council – are being notified.

“Once finished, this link will allow us to better utilise existing capacity in our wastewater network at times of peak flows – helping reduce pressure on the network in the vicinity of Surrey Street.

“The issues involved are complex, and permanent solutions will take time and involve significant investment, but in the meantime – together with other recent short-term improvements – this work is expected to significantly reduce the likelihood of wet weather overflows.

“We understand this work will cause some disruption, and we want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this time.”
