Building consent applications and inspection timeframes

The Dunedin City Council is currently dealing with a record number of building consent applications, which is having an impact on our timeframes for granting building consents.

While the average time to grant a building consent is about 15 working days there are a number of consents which are over the statutory 20 working days and more are expected in the short term.

We are aware this can cause project delays and frustration. Please be patient – we’re working as fast as we can to catch up.

In the meantime, there are some simple things you can do to help, including completing the checklists we provide to help avoid unnecessary delays and reduce costs.

Booking times for an inspection is currently about 5 days.

We are also working with the construction industry to look at ways to make the process as user-friendly and streamlined as possible.
