Background

(noun) matipo, Myrsine australis - a small tree to 7 m tall with leaves that have wavy edges, often with reddish spots, and the young stems are red. The bark of the mature branches and trunk are grey. Found along forest margins and in scrubland throughout the North, South and Stewart Islands.
