Dunedin City Council – Kaunihera-a-rohe o Otepoti

Have your say on DCC’s proposed Traffic & Parking Bylaw

The Dunedin City Council is seeking public submissions on proposed updates to the Traffic and Parking Bylaw, with consultation now open until Wednesday 27 May.

The Traffic and Parking Bylaw enables the Council to regulate traffic and parking controls in the city, balance the needs of road users, and protect and promote public safety on roads and parking areas owned or managed by the Council.

The current bylaw came into effect in 2010. Between 2010 and today, changes to technology and legislation mean that some sections of the bylaw are out of date and no longer fit for purpose.

DCC Group Manager Transport Jeanine Benson says, “Reviewing the bylaw ensures our traffic and parking regulations are fit for today and for the future and will make the bylaw easier to understand for everyone.”

Proposed changes to the Bylaw would:

  • Largely retain existing conditions, but re-structure and add more information to make guidance easier to understand
  • Add new clauses with more information about resolutions, permits, parking areas, and how issues such as engine braking and driving on unformed roads could be restricted by the Council
  • Update terminology and references to align with today’s legislation and technology.
