DCC approves $1m funding for Caversham Tunnel

Councillors today voted unanimously to allocate the $1m already included in the Long Term Plan 2027-37 to the Caversham Tunnel upgrade.

Council has also approvedbringing this budget forward to years one and two for the Long Term Plan 2027-37.

Built between 1871 and 1873, the 865m long Caversham Tunnel only operated until 1910, when it was replaced by a larger dual track tunnel nearby. After this time, it was fitted out to serve as an air raid shelter in World War II but has subsequently been used as a corridor for utilities.

The Dunedin Tunnels Trail Trust (DTTT) proposes to use the Caversham Tunnel as part of the broader tunnels trail to provide an easy walking and cycling link between the central city and Mosgiel.

The DTTT has received $2m from the Government to extend the tunnels trail beyond the first Mosgiel stage constructed by the DCC in 2025. They are currently planning to construct stages two and three.

Voting was unanimous.

Absent: Mayor Sophie Barker, Cr Ong.
