DCC votes to not extend sealed road network

This includes existing dust suppression methods of Otta seal and bio-oils and aligns with current asset management priorities and Government Policy Statement on land transport priorities, avoids capital expenditure that does not attract NZTA co-funding and avoids increasing long-term maintenance costs (sealed roads cost 4x more to maintain).

Most councils do not operate large-scale seal extension programmes. Investment is prioritised toward maintaining existing networks, with limited programmes, co-funding approaches, and alternative treatments commonly used.

The Council voted by division.

For: Crs Christine Garey, Doug Hall, Cherry Lucas, Russell Lund, Andrew Simms, Mickey Treadwell, Lee Vandervis, Steve Walker and Brent Weatherall (9).

Against: Crs John Chambers, Jo Galer, Marie Laufiso and Mandy Mayhem (4).

Abstained: Nil

Absent: Mayor Sophie Barker, Cr Benedict Ong.
