DCC to continue jointly funding Community Ranger roles

Councillors today voted to continue funding up to $74,000 each year for three Community Rangers employed by the Department of Conservation.

The partnership has been in place since 2018 and allows the Ranger programme to operate from November to April, providing a daily, coordinated presence at high-use visitor locations.

It began at a time when DCC was experiencing increasing numbers of freedom campers over the summer period and had limited resource available to provide education and advocacy on responsible camping, compliance with the Reserves and Beaches Bylaw, and appropriate behaviour by other users of DCC reserves and beaches.

The roles include supporting visitor management, responsible behaviour, compliance with DCC bylaws, and protection of wildlife and natural values.

The funding covers three part-time Community Rangers and $74,000 contribution is the total amount provided by DCC.  It will be included in the upcoming Long Term Plan 2027-37.

Under the current agreement, DCC funds the Community Ranger remuneration costs, up to an agreed maximum, while DOC meets the remaining operational costs of delivering the programme, which includes all administrative support, training, office accommodation, day-to-day management and vehicles.

The Council voted by division.

For: Crs John Chambers, Christine Garey, Doug Hall, Marie Laufiso, Mandy Mayhem, Mickey Treadwell and Steve Walker (7).
Against: Crs Jo Galer, Cherry Lucas, Russell Lund, Andrew Simms, Lee Vandervis and Brent Weatherall (6).

Abstained: Nil

Absent: Mayor Sophie Barker, Cr Ong.
