Dunedin City Council prepares to upgrade Caledonian Ground athletics facility

The Dunedin City Council is set to upgrade the Caledonian Ground athletics facility.

The work, which will start on Monday 19 October and is expected to be completed in December, includes resurfacing the athletics track, replacing the throwing cage and pole vault blocks and sections of artificial turf where required.

A condition assessment of the Caledonian Ground track was undertaken following the expiry of its World Athletics Class 2 certification in March this year. The assessment recommended resurfacing the track to enable renewal of the certification, which is required for national-level events.

Group Manager DCC Parks and Recreation Heath Ellis says, “A key focus is the track, which is currently very worn in places. Notably, the new surface will be blue, not red.

We have been working closely with Athletics Otago and schools to minimise disruption and ensure the revamp meets their requirements.

“Our team have worked directly with affected groups to communicate changes and, where possible, relocate their bookings to Memorial Park, Mosgiel.”

The total project cost is approximately $920,000.
