Consultation opens on proposed speed limit changes

The Dunedin City Council is proposing speed limit changes for five roads across Dunedin, seeking community feedback through a formal consultation.

In 2023, DCC consulted on a draft Speed Management Plan that proposed speed limit changes across a number of Dunedin roads. Following the introduction of the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 (the Rule), the draft Plan couldn't go ahead as the Rule introduced a new process for setting speed limits and required road controlling authorities like the DCC to undertake additional public consultation.

A review has been undertaken of the draft Speed Management Plan, using both the public's feedback from that consultation and more recent community concerns, to identify five roads that have the strongest justification for speed management under the current Rule.

The five roads are Dalziel Road, McMaster Road, John Wilson Ocean Drive, Kettle Park Road, and a section of Three Mile Hill Road.

The proposed speed limit changes would better reflect the way these roads are being used, considering factors like increased pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle activity, road safety risks, new residential growth, and community concerns.

The proposals:

  • John Wilson Ocean Drive and Kettle Park Road: Reduce the speed limit from 50km/h to 30km/h.
  • Dalziel Road: Reduce the speed limit from 70km/h to either 50km/h or 60km/h.
  • McMaster Road: Reduce the speed limit from 100km/h to 60km/h.
  • Three Mile Hill Road: Reduce the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h on a 1.82km section of the road where the majority of crashes since 2020 have occurred.

DCC is seeking public feedback on these changes until 5pm Monday 30 November. For more details, including maps and supporting information and to submit feedback, visit www.dunedin.govt.nz/consultation.
