Strathallan Street-Portsmouth Drive intersection opens for traffic

Work to improve safety and traffic flows at the Strathallan Street-Portsmouth Drive-Wharf Street intersection is complete and upgraded traffic signals will be operational from tomorrow.

A key change is the right turn lane on to Portsmouth Drive has been replaced with a second left-turn only lane, aligning with the northbound lanes on Wharf Street. This will create more capacity and improve traffic flow on Strathallan Street.

Traffic can turn right onto Portsmouth Drive from Orari Street or Midland Street intersections.

New kerbsides and median islands are among the other safety and traffic flow enhancements to the intersection, while a roundabout at Ōtaki and Orari Streets that was built earlier this year provides better, safer access to Orari Street, with improved sightlines and traffic flow. A new pedestrian refuge near the Strathallan-Ōtaki Street intersection will be added later this year.

Car parks along Strathallan Street were removed to accommodate the dual approach lanes, both east bound and west bound, near the Portsmouth Drive intersection.

DCC Group Manager Transport Jeanine Beason says: “The work done in this area is necessary to reduce congestion. We are very grateful to motorists and other commuters and area businesses for their patience while we’ve made these significant safety enhancements.”

The Strathallan Street-Portsmouth Drive-Wharf Street intersection improvements are a key part of the wider Harbour Arterial project, running from the Caversham Motorway (SH1)/Andersons Bay Road intersection through Andersons Bay Road, Strathallan Street, Wharf Street, Thomas Burns Street, Ward Street and the Ward Street overbridge.

This $2.8-milllion project, led by DCC in partnership with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, is making significant improvements to safety and traffic flows, and providing a more efficient route for vehicles bypassing the central city.
